The Adelaide Park Lands upgrade will link Adelaide's central business district and the Adelaide Riverbank with Bowden and the parklands.
The upgrade is located along Park Terrace across from Bowden and is a collaboration between Adelaide City Council, City of Charles Sturt and Renewal SA.
The Adelaide Park Lands Upgrade is characterised by diversity, with a wide range of facilities for different age groups and levels of activity provided.
The upgrades will including the following features:
Also included:
Landscaping works have commenced, with anticipated completion in early 2016.
Following wide ranging consultation with communities and interest groups, we revised the draft concept plan released in 2013.
The changes reflect the feedback we received and other information presented to and supported by the Adelaide Parklands Authority and Adelaide City Council.
Key changes include:
Outer Harbour Line – modifications were made to the layout of the concept plan in order to accommodate the above-ground Outer Harbour railway line. The rail corridor is shown as being retained in its current location.
Car parking – the concept plan includes car parking with access further north along Park Terrace. An additional overflow car park for special events is proposed adjacent this car park. The existing overflow car park (accessed from War Memorial Drive) is retained.
Community garden – based on experience at other community gardens and recent investigations into soil conditions at the site, it was considered that the size of the community garden presented in the draft concept plan was too large. The community garden has been resized to better meet the expected demand for plots and to manage soil conditions.
Basketball and tennis court – now proposed to be located together, close to the proposed new sealed car park and picnic facilities.
Gathering space/picnic facilities – now proposed to be located further south (as above). This space is also in line with the Park Terrace entrance and pedestrian crossing to Bowden.
Soccer fields – the existing soccer fields are proposed to be retained, taking into account the need to accommodate the above-ground Outer Harbour railway line. Space for a future fourth soccer field has been provided. The existing mounds to the south of the soccer fields providing a buffer between the railway corridor and fields will be retained. A jogging track will circuit the soccer fields.
Clubrooms and community use space – the location of the proposed soccer clubrooms and community use space has been revised based on the needs of existing users. The facility will be located further north, adjacent soccer field #3.
We engaged with the community to develop and manage a community garden in the Adelaide Park Lands opposite the Bowden Life More Interesting development.
Launched in July 2016, the Park Terrace community garden sits within Park 27b Tulya Wardli, a section of the parklands that has been recently revitalised.
Expressions of interest were sought to create the garden and the local community were engaged to design the layout and facilities.
The Adelaide Park Lands Authority and City of Adelaide endorsed the community garden’s design and management plans.
The City of Adelaide leases the small portion of Adelaide Park Lands to the incorporated body The Park Terrace Community Garden Inc and provides support including signage.
The garden beds are now well established with vegetables and flowers, and is managed by a committee of seven local community members from Bowden, North Adelaide and other nearby suburbs.
The garden has taken part in local events such as the Bowden Town Square launch and Bowden Bestival. The committee is also considering its involvement in future City of Adelaide Neighbour Day events.
New members are always welcome to take part in general maintenance and/or new garden projects devised by the committee from time to time. Join the community conversation on the Park Terrace community Garden Facebook page.
