Large crowd of people enjoying a street party on Peel Street, Adelaide, during the day.

Following successful trial closures and strong community support Renewal SA and the City of Adelaide have worked in partnership with local traders to implement a permanent road closure of Peel Street.

Closing the street from vehicle traffic has the affect of permanently transforming Peel Street into a pedestrian friendly environment while providing traders the opportunity to expand their business through outdoor dining, and stimulating further economic investment into the CBD.

In January 2017, Renewal SA and the City of Adelaide consulted with Peel Street traders to test support for a transition from events-based road closures to a permanent road closure to vehicle traffic. Feedback indicated strong support of a closure to vehicle traffic, noting that businesses wanted to maintain access for deliveries. As such, Peel Street will be permanently closed to vehicle traffic with the exception of service vehicles and delivery access between 3.00 am and 11.00 am daily.

City of Adelaide Minister John Rau, MP, noted that “State Government and the City of Adelaide will work with traders and the community to ensure a smooth transition from the trial to a permanent closure to vehicle traffic.”

Updated on 03 August 2017:

The Street ApPEEL activation in Peel and Leigh Street has been postponed due to the predicted thunderstorms and adverse weather conditions for the afternoon and evening.

We wish to ensure the safety of all patrons and the general public, so we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Renewal SA, City of Adelaide and the local traders look forward to rescheduling the celebration of the permanent road closure to vehicle traffic in Peel Street. Please stay tuned for details of the new activation soon.
