Peel Street closed to traffic on weekends during summer trial
Peel Street will be closed to traffic from 10:00 am each Thursday until 6:00 am the following Monday, beginning 3 November 2016 and continuing for approximately three months through to the end of January 2017. During the timed street closures, there will be no on-street parking in Peel Street. Vehicles travelling to the private car park will still be able to enter and exit from Currie Street.
The decision to undertake a weekend closure of Peel Street for three months follows the success of a similar three-month trial between November 2014 and February 2015 that allowed traders to expand their business through outdoor dining. This trial closure saw a 30 per cent increase in pedestrian traffic on Friday lunchtimes and a significant reduction in pedestrian-car incidents.
The traffic changes are just part of the long-term plan to enhance Peel Street. “Since the state government helped bring Hub Adelaide to Peel Street and introduced small venue licensing, Peel Street has been transformed from an under-utilised laneway into one of Adelaide’s most popular spots, supporting more than 150 new jobs,” noted City of Adelaide Minister, John Rau.
Renewal SA in partnership with Adelaide City Council will also improve lighting and street amenity to ensure Peel Street remains one of Adelaide’s pre-eminent laneways and destinations.
