Eastern suburbs residents are again being encouraged to help shape the future of the Magill campus, with community feedback sought on high-level plans for a new green and inclusive neighbourhood that addresses local needs alongside aged care and housing demand.

Renewal SA is seeking feedback on the draft Magill Campus Structure Plan, released in February this year, which outlines key principles for how future development will balance strategic urban infill with local needs and aspirations.

Through both online and in‑person engagement, the community can have input into the key elements and overall direction of the plan.

This is the second round of engagement on the project. The first round, held between November 2024 and February 2025, helped inform the development of the draft structure plan.

The redevelopment aims to proceed in two stages.

Works on the three-hectare parcel east of St Bernards Road are expected to begin no later than 2027 and this round of consultation will seek community input on land uses, which include market housing, aged care and retirement living, affordable homes and open space.

Further master planning, following this consultation, will determine the design and make-up of these key elements, all of which will be developed having regard to the existing general neighbourhood zoning.

Renewal SA has previously committed to a maximum of 100 homes for market sale, with a minimum of 20 per cent of these dedicated to affordable housing, to be sold through HomeSeeker SA.

These affordable homes are proposed to be delivered as low scale apartments on the smaller parcel of land adjoining St Bernards Road and Gertrude Street.

The community will also be asked for input into the preferred mix and use of open space, which will make up a minimum of 17 per cent of the site.

Development of the main 11-hectare campus site to the west is a much longer-term process which is not anticipated to commence before 2033-34 due to the ongoing lease with Adelaide University. This will involve more detailed planning and consultation as the timeline nears.

At this point, feedback will be sought in relation to the core elements announced in February, which include significant retention of open space, enhancement of the key sport and community facilities and protection of the Third Creek biodiversity corridor.

The engagement period opens on Monday 27 April and will run for eight weeks, closing on Monday 22 June.

A community drop-in session was held at the Magill Campus on Saturday 9 May, providing an opportunity for face‑to‑face discussion with the Renewal SA project team.

Feedback received during this process will help inform the approach to the eastern site and longer-term planning and engagement for the western site.

Renewal SA acquired the Magill campus in late 2023 as part of the merger of the former University of Adelaide and University of South Australia.
