About the project

A new neighbourhood is taking shape at Brompton Gasworks, building on the success of Bowden and transforming a former industrial site into a vibrant, sustainable urban community.

The former Gasworks Brompton site forms part of the broader Bowden precinct, as identified in the original Master Plan, and is being delivered by a private sector partner as part of the precinct’s overall development.

In 2021, MAB Corporation was named the successful proponent of the 5.81-hectare site following a transparent and competitive public tender.

MAB Corporation shared Renewal SA’s vision for the site to become a vibrant, healthy and active extension of the Bowden precinct, transforming a former industrial area into a thriving urban community.

Like Bowden, the master-planned village will maintain a strong commitment to housing diversity, offering apartments and townhouses, with 15 per cent of homes to be delivered as affordable housing.

Homes will sit alongside a range of retail, food and beverage offerings, short-stay accommodation, and generous public open spaces including parks, gardens and play spaces.

Gasworks Bowden will be a gas-free precinct, powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, and will achieve a 6 Star Green Star Communities rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star Communities Framework.

Together with the neighbouring Bowden precinct and emerging Southwark Grounds neighbourhood, Brompton Gasworks is contributing to the ongoing transformation of Adelaide’s inner west into a vibrant mixed-use destination.

Heritage and culture

Former gasworks heritage structures such as the Chief Street Wall and the Retort Houses have been maintained and will be protected and reimagined as part of a dedicated heritage quarter. This space will blend retail, commercial and residential offerings, continuing the legacy of the site while shaping its future under MAB Corporation’s vision.
