In co-operation with TAFE SA, Rubicor Workforce, Workskil and BlueScope Steel, Women in Steel pre-employment programs aim to overcome the lack of women workers with entry-level skills in the local steel manufacturing industry.

Successful applicants from Adelaide’s western and northern suburbs are provided with a foundation skills course to prepare them for work generally, and industry-specific training in steel industry-related electives providing them with nationally accredited qualifications.

The March 2017 program of training and work experience placements led to eight of the program’s 11 participants gaining employment with BlueScope Steel. While students from the October intake are yet to conclude their training, BlueScope’s Transport and Purchasing Manager in South Australia, Linda Medder, is optimistic about the program’s continued success.

“Everyone felt like they got what they needed. So that’s why we’ve decided to go again,” Ms Medder said.

Renewal SA runs training and employment programs with project and other partners, so that communities and individuals benefit from urban renewal activities. Through projects, Renewal SA create opportunities for local people, including training and work experience in building and construction, horticulture, retail, childcare and health.
