A small crowd of people enjoying a public open space in the daytime, with neatly landscaped plantation, public benches, and a stage and coffee area with bright lights in the background.

One of Australia’s most awarded urban design and landscape architecture practices, Adelaide-based Oxigen, will lead Stage One of one of the most important urban design projects along North Terrace’s cultural boulevard at the former Royal Adelaide Hospital site, now called Lot Fourteen.

Renewal SA Chief Executive John Hanlon said the design will attract and encourage people to reconnect with the site as it transforms into a place for all South Australians.

“Lot Fourteen, will provide dynamic public spaces that reflect the site’s history by recognising people’s past connections, and a resource for future generations and industries who will come to know the neighbourhood as a catalyst for opportunity,” Mr Hanlon said.

“Adaptive re-use of a number of heritage and historic buildings is creating up to 23,000 square metres of exciting new spaces which will all be about creating jobs of the future.”

The urban design project will deliver public and accessible spaces amongst these iconic heritage assets to reinforce Lot Fourteen’s potential as a connected neighbourhood of innovation and creation.

This will foster the idea of connectivity and place through seamless design and ‘smart’ principles in lighting, signage, way-finding, waste management and biodiversity.

“Lot Fourteen will become home to multi-national, research-based corporations, entrepreneurs, start-up companies, students and researchers from the State’s leading universities – a powerhouse for the human capital of our universities and an entrepreneurial ecosystem,” Mr Hanlon said.

“Lot Fourteen will see thousands of people working, living and spending time on site, nestled amongst vibrant laneways and Adelaide’s prominent East End.”

Oxigen has worked on urban design projects that define our environments for the last 20 years in delivering the design, planning and construction of some of Australia’s best known places, including the award-winning Tonsley Innovation District.

Oxigen was successful through a public tender released last month to deliver urban design guidelines and the public realm master plan for the creation and innovation neighbourhood, both of which will incorporate feedback from the site’s community engagement sessions.
