A portion of land within Renewal SA’s future Tapangka development on Franklin Street will be set aside for a new arts and media hub, strengthening Adelaide’s role as a centre for culture and creativity.
Anchored by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the facility will be integrated into the broader Tapangka precinct, which is planned to include a mix of high‑rise housing alongside commercial, public and civic spaces.
The hub will bring together several major cultural organisations currently based at the ABC’s Collinswood site, including the State Theatre Company, State Opera and Country Arts South Australia.
Renewal SA Acting Chief Executive Shane Wingard said the arts and media hub was a significant outcome for the site and a strong addition to the Tapangka development.
“We’ve always had a clear vision for Tapangka as an active and vibrant precinct,” Mr Wingard said.
“Bringing together some of South Australia’s most respected cultural institutions within this development will deliver lasting benefits for the city and the wider community.”
The hub will be located on the south‑eastern portion of the site, adjacent to Andrew Street and will feature galleries, studios and rehearsal spaces designed to support a range of creative uses.
The move follows the ABC’s announcement last year that its Collinswood base was nearing the end of its operational life, prompting work to undertake a feasibility study into relocation options.
ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks said the location was fit for purpose and suited to a modern public broadcaster.
“Moving to new state-of-the-art facilities central to the CBD and co-locating with government arts organisations offers enormous benefits to the broader arts community and our staff, audiences, and the creative sector,” he said.
Planning for the facility is under way, with recently released artist impressions showing a multi‑storey, light‑filled building with active frontages integrated into the surrounding streetscape.
The public broadcaster currently employs more than 200 staff at Collinswood.
“This will provide a solid economic boost to the city, with hundreds more workers expected to support nearby businesses and services, including the redeveloped Adelaide Central Market precinct,” Mr Wingard said.
Renewal SA is continuing work on developing a mixed-use community, anchored by market and affordable housing.
The redevelopment of the former Adelaide Bus Station site follows Renewal SA’s acquisition of the 0.68‑hectare parcel of land from the City of Adelaide in February 2024.
