On behalf of the state government, Renewal SA in partnership the City of Adelaide, is committed to the transformation of key Adelaide laneways and streets linking the Adelaide Central Market to the Adelaide Riverbank, and creating a vibrant city in which more people want to live, work, invest and spend time.
South Australian civil contractor T & J Constructions were awarded the Stage 1 construction works contract, which will upgrade Bank Street and Topham Mall North with new lighting, paving, landscaping, street furniture and public art.
In March 2017, artist’s impressions of a redeveloped and activated Bank Street and Topham Mall North were unveiled reflecting the planned reimagining of these laneways. To add to the colour and liveliness of the link, a Public Art Plan has also been developed in collaboration with local creatives who have been encouraged to submit expressions of interest in producing the artworks that will appear in the revitalised laneways.
The small streets that make up the Market to Riverbank link – Pitt Street, Bentham Street, Topham Mall, Leigh Street and Bank Street – are integral to the continued operation of the CBD, and provide an important pedestrian route for more than 15,000 tourists and locals on a daily basis. Transformation of the link will not only continue to support the residents, workers and businesses and the that use the city’s smaller spaces but encourage more people to visit and invest in the CBD and enable new ventures to establish, creating jobs and boosting the day and night time economy.
