Feedback on Renewal SA's vision for the future redevelopment of the Adelaide University Magill campus has confirmed strong community support following a second round of engagement earlier this year.

The engagement report, released today, found participants supported a balanced approach to the site's future development, combining housing, aged care and retirement living opportunities with environmental protection, open space and community facilities.

Renewal SA Chief Executive Shane Wingard said the local community was rightfully eager to contribute, sending a clear message about the importance of protecting the site's natural and heritage assets.

“Hundreds of people provided feedback on our plans online, through written submissions and by dropping into our in-person engagement day,” Mr Wingard said.

"We are committed to this project being one that the existing and future community will be very proud of."

Local community members had an opportunity to contribute to Renewal SA's engagement between April and June 2026.

They highlighted the need to retain mature trees, enhance biodiversity, protect the Third Creek corridor and ensure significant open space remains accessible and usable for the community.

Strong support was expressed for the future vision of the western campus site, which proposes aged care and retirement living, and the preservation of existing open space.

Feedback supported retaining significant open space, protecting heritage and environmental assets, maintaining access to sporting and community facilities, preserving Murray House and exploring opportunities to repurpose existing buildings for future community use.

Feedback on the eastern site, which also includes aged care as well as a range of housing outcomes, including 20 per cent affordable housing, was more varied but broadly supported the proposed vision.

Community members emphasised the importance of open space, high-quality design, housing diversity and ensuring any future development complements the site's green character.

Traffic, parking and congestion in surrounding roads were among the most frequently raised issues during the engagement process.

"We take this feedback seriously and share the concerns of the community," Mr Wingard said.

"Renewal SA will, where possible, work to minimise these impacts throughout the master planning process."

This second phase of engagement built on feedback gathered during the first engagement period, held between November 2024 and February 2025.

Feedback received through both phases has helped shape and refine the Draft Structure Plan.

“We truly thank the local community for their passion for this space, and for taking the time to contribute their views,” Mr Wingard said.

Renewal SA's proposed redevelopment of the Magill campus will proceed in two stages.

The smaller three-hectare parcel east of St Bernards Road is expected to begin development in 2027, while development of the main 11-hectare campus site to the west is a longer-term process and is not anticipated to commence before 2033-34 due to the ongoing lease with Adelaide University.

The feedback provides a strong foundation for the next stages of planning and will help inform future decisions relating to housing, open space, environmental outcomes, community facilities and transport considerations. Renewal SA will continue to consider all feedback as planning progresses.
