Creative proposals sought for Adelaide Riverbank’s urban beach
Renewal SA is seeking creative proposals to bring the Adelaide Riverbank to life with a temporary urban beach, turning one of our state’s most iconic public spaces into a focal point of urban culture and entertainment, while creating a place for all South Australians to enjoy.
The vision for this demonstration project aligns with the state government’s economic priority to broaden culture, economic and sporting activities in the city at all times of the week, throughout the whole year, for people of all ages.
The Urban Beach demonstration project is an extension of the suggested ‘city pool next to the river’ outlined in the 2013 Greater Riverbank Precinct Implementation Plan, of which water activation is a key element. Encouraging people to spend time on and around the water is also a key deliverable outlined in the Riverbank Authority’s strategic vision.
“All of this serves to increase activity and visitation in the Adelaide Riverbank and change the way in which people relate to the River Torrens.” – Chairman of the Adelaide Riverbank Authority Board of Management, Andrew McEvoy
The preferred creative proponent will be provided with a beach and supporting infrastructure as a platform on which to design a successful summer activation. The successful proposal will offer a variety of activities and offerings to appeal to families, young professionals and after work crowds from day to night.
“This activation will aim to present a compelling and comprehensive offering to entice visitors and locals alike down to the Adelaide Riverbank during the summer period.” – General Manager of People and Place, Renewal SA, Georgina Vasilevski
Renewal SA is working in partnership with City of Adelaide to finalise the proposed location of Pinky Flat, subject to public consultation and necessary approvals.
More information about the Urban Beach demonstration project expression of interest is available on the Adelaide Riverbank website. The expression of interest period closes Friday 29 September 2017.
