Banking on better connections
New lighting, paving, greening, street furniture and public art is being installed in both laneways as part of the $14.6 million project by Renewal SA and the City of Adelaide.
The Market to Riverbank link connects the iconic Adelaide Central Market, one of Australia’s best loved food markets, which attracts 9.5 million visitors a year, with the developing world-class cultural and entertainment precinct in the Adelaide Riverbank.
The project will also support the growing prominence of Adelaide’s connected laneways and the businesses and entrepreneurs that use the city’s smaller spaces.
The completed works will encourage more people to visit and invest in the city, enabling new ventures to establish, creating jobs and boosting the day and night time economy.
In both Topham Mall North and Bank Street, underground services have been completed. Granite paving of Topham Mall north is well advanced and will continue over the coming weeks.
On Bank Street, the northern section of roadway is finished and the granite paving on the western side has been completed, opening the street up for easier pedestrian access between Hindley Street and North Terrace. Work continues behind the hoardings in the middle of the street, which will later re-open to traffic.
The progress has been welcomed by Bank Street traders, including the proprietor of Toast espresso and sandwich bar, Helen Carpentieri.
“We’ve noticed the flow of foot traffic has increased since the street has been opened up more,” she said.
“People are commenting on how good the street is starting to look. We’re really looking forward to the completion of the works, it will definitely be a positive for our business.”
Stage 2 of the Market to Riverbank link project will focus on other key laneways along this route, including Pitt Street, Bentham Street, Topham Mall South and Leigh Street.
Adelaide’s many laneways and small streets are revitalising our city experience with their characteristic charm, small bars and cafés, street art and quirky shopping on an intimate, human scale.
